PRAYERS Week Commencing 4th January 2018

A prayer for perseverance

A prayer for perseverance
Holy Lord, Thank You for your grace.
Please help me move beyond the hurdles that trip me up.
Give me the strength and wisdom to look up and see the hope I run toward in Christ.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

A prayer of the church

The LORD gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40.29-31, esv

There are two ways churches excuse themselves from mission. One is to say, “We've tried [insert the name of a mission activity] before, and it didn't work.” The other is to say, “We can't do the things we used to. Everybody's old and tired.”

I don't recognise this church, or the God it serves. There's no place in Scripture where Jesus says, “Don't follow me – you're too old to bother”. There's no place where he says, “Last time I went out to teach, I was disappointed by the turnout – so I'm going to pack it in, and you should all do the same.”

Think 'tired', and you feel tired. Talk 'tired', and others around you feel tired. It's infectious and selfreinforcing, so don't do it. Instead, do what Isaiah says. When you feel weak and tired, as we all do, turn to God – and he will renew your strength. Turn to him with all your heart, and you will learn that the joy of the Lord really is our strength.

There are no cases in Scripture of Jesus rewinding the clock for someone and making them fifty years younger – but whatever age you happen to be, pray to him for the strength you need to do his work.
